Tony and Caitlyn

In Crew on 26/12/2010 at 12:00

Tony and CaitlynOn Tuvalu we met two stray aussies, Tony and Caitlyn. Tony is an auditor for the government and Caitlyn was working as a volunteer for a local NGO. This couple was dreaming of sailing around on the pacific ocean themselves, but they lacked any experience at sea. Therefore they asked us if they could come along and we were very happy to take them. It turned out to be a easy, difficult, calm, rough, sunny and rainy passage. Yes, really. We had pretty much everything from the calmest seas we ever had on the pacific to the roughest with very high short waves, from blazing hot days with sunshine and blue skies to neverending thunderstorms and the worst rainfall ever! Even though we were with the four of us, the last couple of days went by without any sleep whatsoever and after we made our first landfall in the southeast tip of Malaita (Solomon Islands), we ran the generator all night with the airconditioning and all woke up after a full 12 hours of sleep.

We’re on Funafuti, Tuvalu!

In Crew on 10/12/2010 at 05:22

We’ve arrived on Funafuti, the main island and capital of Tuvalu. It’s really nice to be able to go to shops and out for dinner. (don’t expect too much of this though…)
We also have a local phone number for as long as we are here. You can call us between 0900 and 2100 local time. Since we’re on +12 hours UTC this means for the Netherlands that we can be reached between 22.00 and 10.00. The telephone number is +688 901468.

We’d love to hear from you!

December 7, position: Funafuti

We’re here. We arrived in Funafuti around 4 this afternoon. As we passed the dateline somewhere along the way, it is now wednesday evening for us. We are very, very sorry for this very very short update, but we are very, very tired and going to our very, very nicely airconditioned bed now. Read the rest of this entry »

Penrhyn to Fakaofo

In Voyages on 28/11/2010 at 22:16

Monday November 22nd Fakaofo 9.23S 171.16W, at anchor

We have arrived! After a tiring second half of the trip we are now on Fakaofo. This afternoon around 14.00 we finally had the anchor down after going around the west side of the island a few times to find good anchorage. We haven’t found “good” anchorage but the anchor is down anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

Visiting Penrhyn

In People, Voyages on 28/11/2010 at 22:12

We have spent the last week on Penrhyn making many, many and many new friends. The people of Penrhyn are amazingly friendly and hospitable. We have spent much of our time making friends with the locals, especially the children, helping out where we could, joining in on all the activities on the island, witnessed enchanting singing in church and we have seen our first Manta ray at 20 meters deep while dolphins were playing above us. Bora Bora to Penrhyn

In Voyages on 28/11/2010 at 21:49

Monday November 8th Penrhyn 8.59S 158.03W – At anchor!

We did it! The first real passage with the two of us! This afternoon at 14.00 we dropped the anchor in the lagoon of Penrhyn. The Basjako is at anchor next to us and we’ve been sharing war stories and wine this evening. We already met the officials on board and we are the 20th ship to visit Penrhyn this year. Bye Bye Bora Bora

In Voyages on 03/11/2010 at 18:55

Yes, we only spend one day in famous Bora Bora. But we did the quick tour: we cruised the lagoon in our dinghy, snorkeled in the intensely blue water and ate at Bloody Mary’s (and bought the T-shirt to prove it!). The trouble is, we can’t wait to start on our real adventure.

Going North

Today we leave Bora Bora to go to the North. To escape the cyclone season we will be spending the next few months around the equator. The plan is to first visit the northern Cook Islands, then on to Tokelau, Tuvalu and Kiribati. After that we’ll see. According to our Lonely Planet this means we’re going “as far off the beaten track as is humanly possible”. Interesting!

We’ll try to keep this site updated, but the posts will be coming from our satellite phone so there won’t be any pictures for a while.

See you all when we get back on the beaten track!

Two parties and a ritual

In Helena, People on 01/11/2010 at 21:38

On the 31st of October Arent turned 40-ish. That means birthday songs, a homemade cake, best wishes and, if at all possible, a huge party. As he (and we) don’t know that many people in this part of the world yet, we decided to take him to the party of the year on Tahaa: Halloween at the Taravana Yacht Club.

But before we went there, we had an important ritual of our own to perform… Read the rest of this entry »
